Four hundred million years. That's how long trees have been shaping this planet. Humanity has only graced the stage for the last 160,000 of those years. Trees have nurtured our planet for 2500x longer than humanity has even existed.  If the entire 400 million year history of trees were just one day, we wouldn't show up until 11:59:26 PM - 34 seconds before the present moment. Take a minute and breathe in the breadth of that timescale. 

Given our relative infancy, one might imagine that our species would be more deferential to Mother Nature. And for many thousands of years, we were. We were deeply connected to the land, our lives intertwined with its rhythms. But then something just broke.

s it seasonal? Or maybe it's because I am wrestling big life questions as I put finishing touches on this script's pulse points. Probably, it's my desperate ache for more compassion & connection as I watch so much of what I value about this country tremble in the grip of bro-ligarchs.

Whatever it is, I feel now more than ever, The Trees is a musical about love and harmony. And it has the potential to heal the world.

And yikes. Looks like we’re living in a world that’s more hostile toward eco-homo-erotic musicals than I thought. 

For National Coming Out Day, since everybody knows I’m gay already, I thought I would come out about something else. Here goes:

Even though I wrote an eco-homo-erotic musical, I’m not really a “nature person.”

Wow, that January workshop was productive! It’s like Ishook this musical’s branches real hard, and an abundance of ripe, juicy fruit tumbled out all over the place. I have been gathering it, pitting olives, preserving lemons, and putting up applesauce.
